Physical pain and emotional stress are endemic amongst the teaching profession. The consequences of this are costly – hiring a supply teacher, the potential disruption to the pupils and the physical & emotional distress experienced by the teacher.

This course aims to help teachers to deal more constructively with physical pain and with stress.

Physical pain and emotional stress often closely associated with poor postural habits. Much of the material on this course will be based on the Alexander Technique which works by helping people to identify and prevent the harmful postural habits that aggravate, or may be the cause of, stress, pain and under-performance.

Learner outcomesParticipants will learn how to:
  • Understand the postural habits that contribute to stress and pain

  • How to prevent and alleviate poor postural habits

  • Cultivate a relaxed and alert posture

  • Deal more effectively with stress

  • Posture and its impact on pain and stress

  • How to avoid the vicious circle of stiffening & slumping

  • Recognising cycles of alertness and fatigue

  • The fundamental principles of the Alexander Technique

  • Practical procedures to increase postural ease and alertness

 

How will the course be taught?
  • Introductory talk

  • Identification and clarification of learners’ outcomes

  • Demonstration of exercises

  • Practical group exercises.

  • Working in pairs using peer support and feedback

  • Discussion, questions and answers, clarification
